BAHAYA KETIDAKPERCAYAAN YANG MEMBESAR-BESARKAN KESULITAN
“Tetapi orang-orang yang pergi ke sana bersama-sama dengan dia berkata: “Kita tidak dapat maju menyerang bangsa itu, karena mereka lebih kuat dari pada kita.” Juga mereka menyampaikan kepada orang Israel kabar busuk tentang negeri yang diintai mereka, dengan berkata: “Negeri yang telah kami lalui untuk diintai adalah suatu negeri yang memakan penduduknya, dan semua orang yang kami lihat di sana adalah orang-orang yang tinggi-tinggi perawakannya. Juga kami lihat di sana orang-orang raksasa, orang Enak yang berasal dari orang-orang raksasa, dan kami lihat diri kami seperti belalang, dan demikian juga mereka terhadap kami.” Bilangan 13:31-33.
“Sekarang ketika kita baru saja berada di perbatasan tanah perjanjian, janganlah ada yang mengulangi dosa mata-mata yang tidak setia itu. Mereka mengakui bahwa tanah yang mereka tuju untuk dilihat adalah tanah yang baik, tetapi mereka hanya menekankan bahwa penduduknya kuat, para raksasa ada di sana, dan bahwa mereka sendiri seperti belalang di mata orang-orang dan di mata mereka sendiri. Semua kesulitan itu dibesar-besarkan menjadi rintangan yang seolah tidak dapat diatasi. Mereka membuatnya tampak sebagai kebodohan dan kesombongan untuk berpikir untuk pergi dan memiliki tanah itu. Dengan demikian mereka menggoyahkan seluruh jemaat dengan ketidakpercayaan mereka. Orang-orang itu meratap dan berteriak-teriak dengan keras. … 7LtMs, Ms 6, 1892, par. 38.
“Tetapi orang-orang yang telah berbicara dengan nada mengecilkan hati itu tidak surut dalam upaya mereka untuk mencegah orang-orang itu maju dalam melakukan firman Allah. Mereka mencoba untuk melawan suara Kaleb, dengan mengatakan, “Kita tidak akan sanggup maju melawan orang-orang itu; sebab mereka lebih kuat dari pada kita.” [Ayat 31.] Dan mereka membesar-besarkan kesulitan-kesulitan itu sampai seluruh jemaat menjadi gila karena putus asa dan takut. Orang-orang itu menangis sepanjang malam, dan malah menggerutu terhadap orang-orang yang seharusnya mereka percayai…” 7LtMs, Ms 6, 1892, par. 39.
“But the men that went up with him said, We be not able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we. And they brought up an evil report of the land which they had searched unto the children of Israel, saying, The land, through which we have gone to search it, is a land that eateth up the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we saw in it are men of a great stature. And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.” Numbers 13:31-33.
“Now when we are just on the borders of the promised land, let none repeat the sin of the unfaithful spies. They acknowledged that the land they went up to see was a good land, but they declared that the inhabitants were strong, the giants were there, and that they themselves were in comparison as grasshoppers in the sight of the people and in their own sight. All the difficulties were magnified into insurmountable obstacles. They made it appear as folly and presumption to think of going up to possess the land. Thus they leavened the whole congregation with their unbelief. The people broke forth into lamentations and loud outcries… ” 7LtMs, Ms 6, 1892, par. 38.
“But the men who had spoken discouragingly were not to be baffled in their attempts to prevent the people from going forward in doing the word of the Lord. They tried to cry down the voice of Caleb, saying, “We be not able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we.” [Verse 31.] And they exaggerated the difficulties until all the congregation were crazed with discouragement and fear.
